Maria Benedita de Lemos Portugal e Melo is assistent lecture at the Education Institute of Lisbon University. Has a degree and master degree in Socology, from Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, and in 2008 ends her PhD thesis in the area of Sociology of Communication, Education and Culture, by the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE). 

Before she starts working on the Education Institute of Lisbon University, she was lecturer in several instituions like: Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (2000-2010); Universidade Fernando Pessoa (1997-2000) Escola Superior de Educação Jean Piaget 1992-1997). 

In the last years she integrated some investigation projects  sponsored by FCT, namely: "Observatório dos Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária"; "O futuro em aberto: incertezas e riscos nas escolhas escolares" and "Democratização Escolar: Intenções e Apropriações".
